We love to read!Published 13/04/2022 by Kids&Us
The results of the Barometer of Reading Habits and Book Purchases in Spain during 2021 revealed that 64.4% of Spaniards read books for leisure the last year. The figures are similar to those of 2020 when the number of book readers increased significantly due to the arrival of the pandemic and lockdowns.
In addition, the number of underage readers is also growing, as well as the weekly hours dedicated to reading among children between 6 and 9 years old. But what happens after 15? Well, adolescents spend less free time reading for leisure and we ask ourselves, how can we change this dynamic?
Benefits of reading
Encouraging reading in our sons and daughters is one of the best investments we can make for their intellectual development. Reading is important for the development of language skills and helps our children develop empathy and critical thinking as well. We have to lead by example: if adults enjoy reading, their children will be interested in reading. In addition, education experts encourage us to read to our children, even if it is only 10 minutes a day. This will help them improve their reading comprehension and their ability to concentrate, they will expand their vocabulary, improve their pronunciation and encourage interest in learning about their environment.
And how can we get older boys and girls to keep reading? Let's try some of these tips:
- Let them read what interests them: perhaps they have not yet found a topic or plot that they like enough that would get them hooked on reading. It is important that they try different styles until they find the genre that they enjoy.
- Have a library at home: it doesn't have to be the Buenos Aires National Library, just have books on hand; this will make it easier for them to satisfy their curiosity if at any time they feel like flicking through a book.
- Dedicate a specific time to reading: it can be to start for a little while in a space where they feel comfortable, it will be their moment. Even if it's only 10 minutes, that’s better than none!
- Any time is good: not only can we read in bed before going to sleep, but any place is also good! On the bus, to school, between classes, after eating, etc.
Our editorial line
Luckily today we can turn the mobile phone into an ally for reading; digital books, and even audiobooks, are a great opportunity for our teenagers to stay hooked on the adventure of reading.
It goes without saying that if, in addition to reading, they do it in English, they will better assimilate grammatical rules, learn new expressions, etc. The objective of the Kids&Us editorial line is to help non-English-speaking children develop good linguistic skills in the language, in addition to providing families with some tools that allow them to share the adventure of learning with their children.
At Kids&Us we have more than 20 exclusive titles in our editorial line. From the Babies, Betty Sheep and Many Monsters collections for boys and girls from 0 to 5 years old, or the crazy adventures of Gina Ginger and Charlie Chives for boys and girls from 5 to 7 years old, to the Play&Learn and Readers titles for the older ones.
All the titles in the Kids&Us editorial line work with the Talking Pen, the digital pencil that gives voices to our stories. The Talking Pen ensures flawless exposure to English and provides perfect reading enjoyment for all the family.
In short, reading is exercise for the brain!
