Five tips to stop rushing

Without fail, at the end of the year everyone is in a rush. In a rush to cross out the New Year resolutions we made just 12 months earlier, in a rush to find the right presents, in a rush to choose what to cook on Christmas day... Rush, rush, and more rush! Stop for a moment and think about that; surely this must go against what you had told yourself at the start of the year: savour every moment, live your life at a slower pace, spend more time on yourself, see your loved ones more often, read more, do more sport... In short, live more.

However, life is fickle, and we are creatures of habit. Or isn’t this exactly the same as last year? The pandemic turned the world on its head, we adapted to a new way of living but as soon as we were able to, and maybe even without realising, we have gone back to our old way of life, back to rushing around... We just don’t learn!

Perhaps the slow life is a chimera: an impossible dream that we can’t make come true. I would like to believe that is not the case, and far from having the absolute answer to how to live without rushing, I can share what I do to slow down when I feel that everything is going too fast.

Here are my five top tips to stop rushing:

1.- Do a yoga session. Sometimes it's hard to put your leggings on, but when you move, your body appreciates it - you didn’t need me to tell you that!

2. Have a coffee, tea, or infusion with an old friend.

3. Read a good book. Finding a book that you can’t put down and whisks you away to a whole new world is pure magic.

4. Take a stroll along the beach, in the mountains, in the park, in the garden... wherever, as long as you go for a stroll. Doing so calms the soul and helps us to slow down and organise our thoughts.

5. And, finally, daydream. “Daydream” you may be asking. Yes, daydream. Doing nothing is frowned upon, I know, but there are times in life where the only thing you need to do is just daydream, or even be bored.

By applying all these tips, I am able to enjoy my day-to-day life and cherish the time spent with my loved ones. The passage of time is inevitable and, if not, look at how children grow up, it all goes so fast... Although I always try to make the most of the time I spend with my loved ones, Christmas provides us with some extra time that we haven’t had throughout the year.  It is the time of year to have fun with our family, enjoy each other's company, and reminisce over what the Christmas holidays were like when we were children. To those of you who can experience the magic of Christmas with little children at home, I encourage you to enjoy it as much as you can, and to those of you whose children are older, like in my case, much patience and love. The memories we make now will be a part of their lives, it will pack their emotional bag and who knows if these memories will serve to prepare them in the future when they have their own family.

In short, let the Christmas spirit invade your home, little by little, without rushing, and enjoying every single moment.
